Spatial Memory in Hypertext Information Retrieval

چکیده
The spatial metaphor of hypertext has been used by researchers both to help users understand the system and as a model to study the cognitive processes involved in hypertext interaction [3]. However, in the second case, there is not enough empirical evidence supporting that spatial representations and spatial processing are used to perform hypertext task as Information Retrieval (IR). The experiment presented in this contribution used the dual task paradigm to analyse the involvement of the visuoesptial sketchpad and the phonological loop of Working Memory in IR task. In addition, the interface format (graphical or textual) and the length of path to find a target were manipulated. Results showed that only the spatial concurrent task was impaired when performed together with the IR. Replicating our previous research, users found fewer targets, were slower and got more disoriented in graphical interfaces and long paths. However, these variables did not interact with the concurrency of spatial and verbal tasks. These findings support the involvement of the working memory's sketchpad during the searching of information in hypertext. We discuss the implication of these findings for the spatial metaphor of hypertext and for the hypertext design.

CITE WITHOUT PERMISSION Working Memory Architecture and its Implications for Hypertext Design: Insight from Deaf Signer Users Research
Starting from models of working memory and hypertext navigation, this research focused on how the specific demands of hypertext systems could be adapted to fulfill the memory peculiarities of deaf signer users. We manipulated the Verbal and Visuospatial storage demands of a hypertext information retrieval task. The results showed that differences in accuracy, response time, and lostness between...

It has been shown that brain glucose metabolism impairment, obesity, and diabetes couldlead to cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis. Kisspeptin (KP) a G-proteincoupled receptor neuropeptide, has been suggested as a link between energy balance andreproduction. Some studies have shown that the attenuation of KP signaling decreases metabolismand energ...

متن کاملEffect of 3 Alpha-Anderostanediol and Indomethacin on Acquisition, Consolidation and Retrieval Stage of Spatial Memory in Adult Male Rats
Background: Testosterone and its metabolites have important roles in learning and memory. The current study has conducted to assess the effect of pre-training, post-training and pre-probe trial intrahippocampal CA1 administration of 3 alpha-anderostanediol (one of the metabolites of testosterone) and indomethacin (as 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme blocker) on acquisition, consolida...
متن کاملAutomatic hypertext information retrieval in a corporate memory using noun phrases in context
In this paper, we describe a method to generate an information retrieval hypertext structure on a large collection of homogeneous documents by generating links only between noun phrases that are pertinent for navigation. Noun phrases are selected by automatic extraction and filtered on the basis of the linguistic context class where they appear, also determined automatically.
